The Ministry of Justice's legal aid center and the British Council jointly held legal aid peer review training sessions in Zhengzhou, Henan province from March 16 to18 as part of the China-EU Access to Justice Program. 

The Cultural and Education Section of British Embassy represented the EU side. A total of 29 representatives joined the training, including those from Beijing, Henan, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shandong, Hubei, Guangdong and Zhejiang, as well as special guests from the Ministry of Justice's legal aid center and the All-China Lawyers Association.

Sang Ning, deputy director of legal aid center, Zhou Jisheng, deputy head of the Henan provincial justice department, and Paul Dalton, leader of the experts team on the EU side all delivered speeches. Alan Paterson, chairman of the International Legal Aid Group (ILAG) and Avrom Sherr from the University of London gave lectures. 

The training focused on legal aid peer review. European experts were invited to introduce advanced ideas and experiences from the EU about peer review on the quality of case. The training covered peer review overview, civil legal aid case evaluation standards and guidelines, evaluation systems and procedures in England and Scotland, the influence of peer review on case quality and its relevant advantages. It also provided a simulated evaluation practice in which European experts offered one-on-one instructions to participants. The training integrated theoretical lectures and practice and was expected to help students increase knowledge and acquire relevant skills. It will no doubt play a positive role in improving case quality peer review.
