Updated: June 8, 2012

Taicang city celebrated the centenary of Wu Chien-Shiung's birthday on May 31 in memory of her patriotic spirit, scientific pursuit and outstanding achievements. Wu(May 31, 1912 – February 16, 1997) was a Chinese-American nuclear physicist with great contributions to physical science, thus nicknamed as "Chinese Marie Curie" and "First Lady of Physics".

The city will be further motivated to build itself into a modern and livable port city featuring more advanced economy, better ecological environment and harmonious society and better life for people on this special occasion.

Wu’s bronze statue and exhibition hall, displaying her life experience, were dedicated in the morning. They will play an important part in spreading the spirit of Wu. People also paid tribute to her life and work and laid wreaths in front of her tomb.

Today also marked the 100th anniversary of Mingde primary school, founded in 1913 by Wu’s father, Wu Zhongyi. It is here that Wu received her early education. She wrote an inscription for her alma mater and set up a Wu Zhongyi Scholarship Fund, demonstrating her love for her hometown.

The school will carry on the Mingde culture, pass on "Chien-Shiung spirit", and adhere to a right idea of running a school so that it will become a modern and first-class school.
