Countdown to 100th anniversary of Wu Chien-Shiung
Mr Lu Weiqi, deputy secretary of Taicang city’s municipal committee, announced that the 100th anniversary ceremony of Wu Chien-Shiung will be taking place in the municipal administration center.
On May 30, Wujianxiong’s bronze statue and the Wu Chien-Shiung’s museum will be open to the public for the first time, which will be met with many experts and leaders of major institutions. Activities such as a memorial ceremony of Wu Chien-Shiung and an international symposium with the theme of “Modern science and technology, Higher education and social development” will be held on the same day.
Chen Xuerong, minister of the Publicity Department of the municipal committee, was present and confirmed the arrangements for the ceremony would run smoothly.
Wu Chien-Shiung was born May 31, 1912 in Taicang, Jiangsu. She was an internationally famous nuclear physicist was known as the ‘the Marie Curie of the eastern world’. She made enormous contributions to the beta decay research area and she was awarded the national medal of science by President Ford in 1975, which at the time was the highest honor in the scientific field. She passed away at the age of 85 on Feb 16, 1997 and was buried in Taicang according to her wishes.
