Dutch artist Danny, a long-time Jiading resident, recently launched his latest art exhibition at the Waigang Town Cultural and Sports Service Center in Jiading district, Shanghai. The collection showcases Danny's unique perspective on the city and district, blending traditional Chinese culture with his personal experiences.

The exhibition includes idiom-inspired works like "Starting from Scratch". Danny shared amusing anecdotes from his creative process, recalling how he initially misunderstood "白手起家" (starting from scratch) as "starting with white hands", which eventually inspired a painting.
Despite limited Chinese proficiency, Danny is deeply interested in traditional Chinese culture, especially idioms. "Behind a few simple words, there's always a historical story," he said.
Some of the works cleverly incorporate idioms Danny has learned, reflecting his life in Jiading. A chance encounter at Jiabei Countryside Park during the pink muhly grass season inspired the piece "Time Flies", capturing an idyllic scene where time seemed to stand still.
A visitor surnamed Liang was particularly drawn to the creative paintings, calling them "truly fascinating".
Another standout installation is "Home", featuring 56 "homes" representing China's 56 ethnic groups. Each home's structure is similar, but their styles and colors are distinct, symbolizing the unity and diversity of China.
For Danny, Jiading is more than just a place to live; it has become his second home. "I hope to convey my love and gratitude for Jiading through my art," Danny said.
The exhibition includes 24 pieces from four series, including "Shanghai As My Home", which was previously displayed at the seventh China International Import Expo. Art enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the exhibition in person.
