The historic West Gate Cultural Street in Jiading, a central part of the West Gate Historic District, is undergoing significant redevelopment. Established over 1,500 years ago, this area is known as the "root of Jiading".
The first phase of redevelopment includes demolishing old structures and leveling land in the initial project area. This area, rich in cultural heritage, will see its historical features preserved. The strategy includes preserving significant structures, remodeling textures, reorganizing spaces, and enhancing street and building facades.
Key highlights of the redevelopment include:
- East Entrance: Retaining traditional blue bricks and white walls, with modern commercial updates.
- West Entrance: A new exhibition hall and modern landscaping will enhance this landmark.
- Lianqi Market: Positioned as a commercial hub with major retail stores.
- Ancient Bridge Illumination: Revitalizing the old Xianghua Bridge site with traditional stonework and carvings.
- Tea and Theater Experience: Restoring the Shanglinchun Bookhouse for an immersive tea and theater experience.
- Riverside Interface: Opening up the riverside with elevated commercial spaces and water activities.
Land leveling is expected to be complete by November. It will be followed by building renovations and infrastructure improvements. This project aims to blend tradition with modern functionality, creating a unique cultural destination in Jiading.
