The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in May 1964. It is the first institute in China to specialize in laser science and technology.

SIOM specializes in high-power laser technology, strong field physics, high-intensity optics, information optics, quantum optics, laser and optoelectronic devices, and optical materials.

SIOM has over 1,000 employees, including over 900 professional technicians. Nine distinguished SIOM scientists have been elected academicians of CAS or the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

By the end of 2022, SIOM had applied for 5,120 patents, of which 3,335 were approved, and received 49 national-level awards for its scientific and technological achievements.

In recent years, SIOM has actively promoted regional cooperation, as well as the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, which has contributed to the new sci-tech innovation and achievement transformation in the Yangtze River Delta region.

International cooperation and academic exchange are of utmost importance to SIOM. It has established international cooperative research projects with over 10 countries and established joint research laboratories with renowned research institutions from countries such as Russia, Israel, Japan, and South Korea.

In recent years, SIOM has also promoted academic exchange through various fellowship programs. Visiting scholars, scientists and entrepreneurs from over 50 countries and regions, including a number of Nobel laureates and heads of state, have visited SIOM or participated in short-term cooperation at SIOM.

Due to its great achievements in international cooperation, SIOM was named an International Cooperation Base by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 2007.
