A traffic function improvement project on the Shanghai-Jiading Expressway was announced recently to extend and lift the main line of the expressway, local media reported on Feb 25.

Jiading district, Baoshan district, and Putuo district are all included in the project's 9.6-kilometer length. It will be constructed as an elevated highway with two-way six lanes in accordance with urban expressway standards. Vehicles designated travel speed is 80 km per hour.

The Shanghai-Jiading Expressway was completed in 1988 as the first expressway on the Chinese mainland. It is also an important route that links downtown Shanghai with Jiading district.

The expressway was built on the ground, obstructing north-south traffic, a growing inconsistency as the region develops.

After the improvement, the expressway will make way for seven branch roads running north and south, which will contribute to the regional development in areas along the expressway.

In terms of setting up ramps alongside the main line, additional ramps will be set up on the east side of Qilianshan Road and both sides of Chenxiang Road, and the Fengxiang Road ramp will be moved to Jinying Road, which will help shorten the average distance between entrances and exits to about two km and relieve the congestion in the Nanxiang area in Jiading district.
