Jiading district in East China's Shanghai launched a project to protect and purify its waters in an effort to develop a clean and ecofriendly city, local news reported on March 31.

Zhoujing village in Waigang town, located in the northern part of Jiading, is a traditional Jiangnan water town and has made significant achievements in improving its natural environment with beautiful and clean water.

"The riverways used to be narrow and covered with weed on both sides. A slew of measures have been rolled out by the local government, ranging from removing illegal buildings and dredging rivers to cleaning up agricultural waste, enabling villagers to enjoy a clean and comfortable environment," said a local resident.

Efforts will also be made to sustain ecosystems in the river basins across Jiading and improve the water environment, according to Cao Yeqing, Party secretary of Zhoujing village.

Cao added that the government will also ramp up efforts to improve the rural living environment by building ecological green corridors and sightseeing spots along its roads and across the village.
