Shanghai's Jiading district built 2,002 5G base stations in 2020 and achieved full 5G network coverage in the district, according to statistics released by authorities on Jan 15.

Statistics show that China's three major telecom operators, China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom, built 1,186, 486, and 330 5G base stations, respectively, in Jiading last year, and shopping malls, hospitals, and government agencies in the district have achieved full 5G network coverage.

5G coverage has promoted the high-quality development of Jiading's unmanned driving industry and helped the district become a hot destination for new technologies and products related to unmanned driving.

Jiading district is home to the National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Shanghai) Pilot Zone, the first of its kind in the country. The pilot zone was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June 2016 and serves as a safe place for domestic ICVs to conduct road tests. To date, the district has opened 315 kilometers of road for testing ICVs, covering an area of 110 square kilometers.

In recent years, Jiading has strengthened efforts to promote the application of 5G ICVs. It cooperated with SAIC Motor, Huawei, and China Mobile in 2019 to build the world's first 5G-based smart transportation demonstration project.

Jiading is currently making efforts to explore the innovative development of 5G-related industries, such as "5G + smart medicine", and "5G + intelligent manufacturing", and the district plans to build 3,000 5G base stations this year to achieve strong 5G coverage and accelerate the development of a digital city.
