The Shanghai United Imaging Healthcare Co wooed the global healthcare community with their presentation of a 20-second film of total-body dynamic imaging at the annual meeting of Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago, the United States, on Nov 25.

The film is composed of 1,260 coherent images produced by uEXPLORER, the world‘s first total-body PET-CT, which allows people to see vividly the whole process of drugs flowing and diffusing inside human blood vessels, and being ingested and metabolized by tissues and organs after being injected into the body.

The PET-CT device that came out this year was co-developed by United Imaging and a leading American molecular imaging research team EXPLORER, after two years of endeavors.

The device has made many breakthroughs, for it realizes a 194-centimeter axial field of view (FOV), an unprecedented high sensitivity that is 30 to 40-fold higher than traditional scanner, a 2.9 mm spatial resolution, and a low radiation dosage that is only one fortieth of traditional ones.

The United Imaging also improves the stability of the device and makes it more user-friendly to better meet the needs of clinical application and scientific research.

With the help of real-time dynamic imaging, the device is expected to help precisely identify the inflammation, infection and micro metastasis of cancer cells, help unveil how the brain interacts with organs by showing the neural connection between human organs, and help reduce research costs and shorten research periods.

Simon Cherry, head of EXPLORER and distinguished professor at the Univeristy of California, Davis, spoke highly of the device and expressed his hopes that its cooperation with United Imaging makes their cutting-edge ideas in the field of molecular imaging come true.

The first uEXPLORER will be delivered to clients in 2019, and many top-rated European and American research institutes have expressed an intention to buy the device, according to United Imaging.
