The China Stem Cell Group Co announced that it has planned to build one of the world's largest stem cell hospitals in Jiading district of Shanghai at a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation meeting on Nov 29.
The hospital is expected to start construction in 2016, helping more patients to get cured from blood diseases, the leukemia in particular, said one of its company leaders.
The group is a leading company in China that works on the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from umbilical cord blood. So far, it has successfully completed nearly 1,600 such operations.
Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and can divide to produce more stem cells. These cells in humans act as part of a repair system for the body. The hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a medical procedure in the field of hematology, most often performed for patients with certain cancers of the blood or bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma or leukemia.
