The awe-inspiring Badain Jaran Desert-Towers of Sand and Lakes site, located in the Alshaa League, in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, has been selected to join the International Union of Geological Sciences' First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites.

The scenic site is located in the Alshaa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark.

The IUGS is a non-governmental academic organization in the field of international geological sciences. It is a long-term partner of UNESCO with the Global Geoparks Network and is also one of the largest and most active geological science groups in the world.

The selection is aimed at the international certification of the most important geological heritage sites in the world, announcing the scientific value and research value of important geological heritage sites, arousing extensive attention from the international community and promoting the popularity and international influence of important geological heritage sites.
