A new set of regulations -- called Measures for the Prevention and Control of Pollution of Arable Land in Hohhot -- is to take effect on Sept 1, according to a news conference held in Hohhot in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on July 14.

Officials said the measures consist of 27 articles that have been put together in accordance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Soil Pollution, as well as relating to the actual situation in Hohhot.

They said the initiative was of great significance to protect the soil environment and resources of cultivated land in Hohhot city.

Also in focus is the aim to improve the quality of cultivated land, the promotion of green and high-quality agricultural development and ensuring the quality and safety of agricultural products and public health.

Officials said the measures focus on the three aspects of the prevention and control of farmland pollution in Hohhot.

The first area is the overall design of the main systems for the prevention and control of farmland pollution; the second is to formulate specific measures in a targeted manner; the third is to solve major problems in practice.

Officials said that articles 16 and 17 of the measures stipulate the government and arable land users in terms of scientific research, scientific and technological training, encouragement of organic fertilizer use, green prevention and control and compliant use of pesticides.
