Cities in Inner Mongolia such as Hohhot, Baotou, Ordos, Hulunbuir, Wulanchabu have main railway stations.

Beijing-Hohhot Trains: the Beijing-Baotou Railway and the Jining-Baotou double-track railway have stations in Hohhot, and trains from the city can reach almost all Chinese cities. There are also international trains heading for Ulan Bator every Wednesday and Thursday. Travelers can also reach Frankfurt in Germany by boarding a train in Hohhot. The city itself has two railway stations, Hohhot and Hohhot East Railway Station.

Baotou-Lanzhou Railway: A line from Baotou East Railway Station in north China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region to Lanzhou station in northwest China's Gansu province has been open to passengers since July, 1958. 140 km out of the total 990 km of railway passes through desert, making it China's first desert railway.

The first high-speed railway in Inner Mongolia autonomous region began test runs on May 7, 2017, in preparation for regular use by the end of July. The high-speed train ran at a speed of 250 -275 km/hour on a stretch from Ulanqab to Hohhot.

In 2016, the total cargo transportation volume in the autonomous region reached 0.7 billion tons, an increase of 4.8 percent from the previous year. The ton/mileage output reached 202.95 billion ton kilometers, an increase of 0.3 percent. The passenger volume reached 54 million, an increase of 5.4 percent, and the volume of passenger transportation reached 22 billion passenger kilometers, increasing by 5.5 percent.
