Huzhou achieves milestone with 189 child-friendly areas
Huzhou in Zhejiang province has achieved its 2025 target of establishing 50 new child-friendly areas, bringing the total to 189.
The initiative, launched in 2023, aims to transform everyday environments — such as healthcare, education, and recreational spaces — into friendly areas accessible to children.
The city has developed guidelines and evaluation systems for creating child-friendly spaces in parks, communities, and other areas, ensuring a comprehensive approach to construction and management.

Huzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital's new campus exemplifies this initiative. It has tailored its facilities to children's needs, featuring a "one-meter-high" information desk and animal murals to ease anxiety. Specialized clinics for pediatric massage and weight management have been introduced, alongside interactive health education platforms hosting over 10 unique activities.
To ensure effective implementation, Huzhou has integrated child-friendly development into its strategic planning. The Women's Federation outlined a 2025 task list, including 50 adaptation projects across villages, communities, hospitals, parks, and commercial areas. Regular reviews of the existing units address any issues, ensuring usability and satisfaction for children and parents.
Beyond physical spaces, the initiative fosters active engagement. Since 2025, nearly 1,000 activities have benefited 23,000 families, with reading sessions, educational courses, and enhanced fitness facilities encouraging family participation. Additionally, 85 "Children's Observation Teams" have been established, allowing children to voice their ideas and participate in community discussions.
