In Changxing county, Huzhou, Zhejiang province, Pan Liang, the owner of the Yanzhi Pottery Flowerpot Studio, has revitalized traditional pottery craftsmanship by giving it a modern twist.

Changxing, known as the only producer of purple sand pottery in Zhejiang, has a rich heritage in purple sand and a long history of pottery artistry.

After studying arts and crafts in college, Pan returned to his hometown, Dongfeng village, and discovered a niche market for unique clay flower pots.

Moving away from the conventional styles of the domestic pottery industry, Pan's creations feature a minimalist aesthetic with creamy tones and delicate floral relief designs, appealing to a younger audience.

The flower pots come in various shapes, from coffee cups to ice cream cones, with most named after everyday desserts.

The thickness of the glaze and different placements in the kiln make each piece unique, which has been well received by younger customers. Utilizing online platforms like Xiaohongshu, the studio can generate up to 60,000 yuan ($8,213.92) during one livestreaming session. Its combined online and offline sales are expected to reach 15 million yuan this year.

At the 25th Hortiflorexpo IPM Shanghai, Pan's blend of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and modern design captivated global visitors.

"We have had long-term overseas clients since last year, and this year we plan to establish a foreign trade company," said Pan. To show the beauty of traditional Chinese craftsmanship in the international market, he not only develops flower pots suitable for different types of plants but also explores incorporating traditional cultural elements into his works.
