Five towns in Southwest China's Guizhou province have made the 2018-2020 Home of Chinese Folk Culture and Art list, according to the Ministry of Culture and Art on Jan 16.
Starting in 1987, the list is aimed at promoting the development of folk culture and arts, as well as encouraging local cultural activities. As of 2018, 964 places across China had been included in the list, with 50 being in Guizhou.
Two of the five listed towns are in Anshun city. They include Tianlong, famous for its Tupu Dixi Opera, a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) military tradition to boost morale at the beginning of an expedition, and Maguan, famous for making Huadeng ("decorated lantern" in Chinese).
The other three towns are Nanpanjiang, famous for Bayin, a popular vocal art, Liping county, known for the Grand Song of the Dong minority, and Zhonghe, known for its mawei ("horse tail") embroidery.
