Phase III of Baiyun airport expansion enters new phase

Updated : May 22, 2024

Recently, the ongoing Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Phase III expansion project has progressed to the construction phase, involving the installation of metal roofing and curtain wall decorations for the T3 terminal building.

The Phase III expansion project of Baiyun airport represents the most extensive renovation and expansion initiative in the history of China's civil aviation airport construction. Additionally, it constitutes an integral part of the world-class airport cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

This project mainly includes the construction of the new T3 terminal building, as well as the development of two new runways (West Runway 2 and East Runway 3), a comprehensive transportation center, and the East and West Concourses of the T2 terminal building.

The T3 terminal building, a flagship project for the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Guangdong, is a marvel of architectural ingenuity. Comprising a main building and four concourses, it is built using a spatial grid structure inspired by flowers. The unique architectural form not only enhances the building's aesthetics but also serves as a distinctive symbol of Guangzhou's floral crown.

The steel grid projection area of the main building of the terminal reaches 118,000 square meters, equivalent to the combined area of 16 standard football fields. This intricate structure necessitates the welding of around 18,000 nodes and 82,000 bars, requiring a total steel usage of nearly 20,000 metric tons.

The project team has embraced innovation in construction methods, utilizing the "on-site assembly + high-altitude hydraulic lifting" method. This approach has not only achieved high-precision welding operations but also enhanced the overall welding quality. To ensure the highest standards, ultrasonic flaw detectors were employed to inspect all welds, leaving no room for compromise.
