Guangzhou Gymnasium undergoes 3rd major renovation

Updated : April 26, 2024

Guangzhou Gymnasium in Baiyun district is currently undergoing its third major renovation. The district is set to host the 15th National Games' women's U18 volleyball and trampoline events, as well as the wheelchair basketball events of the Special Olympics.

The renovation includes necessary repairs, upgrades, and modifications to the venue's sports facilities, electromechanical smart systems, and barrier-free facilities to meet the requirements of the competitions.

Adhering to the design concept of simplicity, safety, and excellence, the renovation employs a "preserve as much as possible" approach while incorporating smart design and specialized barrier-free design.

Special emphasis is placed on improving barrier-free facilities, including seats, handrails, signage, guideposts, tactile paving, service counters, smart service stations, information screens, restrooms, and showers, ensuring standardized, international, and user-friendly facilities throughout the venue.

The renovation also encompasses the optimization of the sports park, adding kapok flowers, enhancing signage, and creating clustered plant landscapes to establish a vibrant and culturally rich public sports space with Lingnan regional characteristics.

Furthermore, the venue is poised to undergo lighting enhancements to improve its nighttime visual appeal. Currently, the renovation work is focused on the roofing of Hall 1, with plans to extend the upgrade to Hall 2, the central hall, and the surrounding areas, with an expected completion date by the end of December 2024.
