The Ministry of Commerce recently announced the results of the 2023 national assessment and evaluation of the comprehensive development level of national economic and technological development zones. This evaluation highlighted the outstanding achievements of two particular zones in terms of actual utilization of foreign capital.

Specifically, the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone (Guangzhou Development District) and Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone (ETDZ) were recognized for their performance. Both zones achieved remarkable rankings, placing them again among the top two nationwide in this category.

GDD has maintained the top position for five consecutive years, followed closely by Guangzhou Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone, which has secured second place for two consecutive years.

Since its establishment in 1984 as one of the first National Economic and Technological Development Zones following China's reform and opening-up, GDD has attracted numerous Global Fortune 500 and multinational companies, including Mars Wrigley, AstraZeneca, and Hyundai Motor.

This region has actively fostered a high-quality urban development pattern, forming over 5 trillion- yuan ($793.65 billion)-level industrial clusters in areas such as automobile manufacturing, new display technology, and green energy. In 2023, GDD's utilization of foreign capital exceeded $3 billion, with high-tech industries accounting for over 90 percent of this investment.

Additionally, GDD has continuously expanded its openness, with its economic and trade connections extending to over 100 countries and regions worldwide. The China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City has become a preferred destination for Singaporean enterprises investing in China. Sino-European cooperation has been incorporated into national and regional policy cooperation examples.

Furthermore, it has optimized its business environment by introducing cross-border business registration services and actively integrating into the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, advancing significant projects like the Sino-Hong Kong Technology Cooperation Park.

On the other hand, Nansha (ETDZ), established in 1993 and later designated as a free trade pilot zone, has gathered leading foreign enterprises like GAC Toyota and Japan Denso, attracting over 260 Global Fortune 500 investment projects. In 2022, Nansha ETDZ was named a "National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone (Ecological Industrial Park)," exemplifying China's national ecological industrial parks.

The achievements of these two zones in Guangzhou demonstrate China's exceptional capability to attract foreign investment, promote economic development, and underscore China's firm commitment to opening up and international cooperation.
