This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Guangzhou Urban Innovation Award (Guangzhou Award).

As the first international award named after a Chinese city, it has promoted many successful and innovative examples of global urban governance over the past decade, contributing urban wisdom and demonstrating the growing confidence of Chinese cities.

In 2012, Guangzhou, United Cities and the Local Governments and the World Association of Major Metropolises jointly established the Guangzhou Award, aiming to showcase the best urban innovation practices on a global scale while promoting innovation and sustainable development.

Over the past decade, 556 cities from 96 countries and regions contributed 1,361 cases and have responded proactively to the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN, Guangzhou Mayor Guo Yonghang said on Dec 12 at the 2022 Workshop for Thought Leaders in celebrating the anniversary of the award.

Some of the outstanding projects of the Guangzhou Award have been included in the UN-Habitat Urban Agenda Platform Urban Best Practice Database, providing an important reference for global cities to implement the UN New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Guangzhou Award has witnessed the important transformation of Chinese cities' foreign exchanges to multilateral exchanges, and from participation to leadership. After 10 years of development, the award has become an important platform for greater cooperation between cities around the world.

By building an active and efficient urban multilateral exchange and cooperation network, the Guangzhou Award provides strong support for Guangzhou to establish itself as an international exchange center. It also provides Chinese solutions for strong urban governance, contributing its best case studies to support global development initiatives.
