Denis Bastieri, an expert from Guangzhou's international Friendship City Padua, won the 2021 Guangdong Science and Technology Cooperation Award on April 15.

Bastieri is a professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Padova in Italy, as well as a distinguished professor at Guangzhou University. He had previously won the 2020 International Cooperation for Foreign Experts of Guangdong Universities.

He mainly focuses on high-performance computing, big data, and high-energy astrophysics with a commitment to improving the efficiency of astronomical observation data processing through parallel computing.

He is in charge of one national science research fund project and five Italian research fund projects. He has also published more than 300 dissertations, many of which were published in Science and Nature, with more than 35,000 citations. He has also once been ranked among the top one percent highly cited scientists in the world by Clarivate Analytics.

In 2021, when the opening ceremony of the 130th session of the China Import and Export Fair and the Pearl River International Trade Forum (PRITF) was held in Guangzhou, Bastieri participated as a representative of Padova. 

He expressed his appreciation of the event, as well as shared his thoughts on the changes since the reform and opening up of China and Guangzhou. He also detailed the friendly relations between Friendship Cities based on his Canton Fair experience. 

Padua is a city in northern Italy and the capital of Padova province, the economic and transportation hub of the region. Padua is located 40 kilometers west of Venice and 29 kilometers southeast of Vicenza. Together with Venice, it is regarded as part of the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area.
