A policy interpretation to the three-year action plan on boosting the development of new-generation artificial intelligence (AI) in Guangzhou from 2020 to 2022 was released by the Guangzhou municipal industry and information technology bureau on March 3.

Guangzhou is expected to become an industrial cluster for AI in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the pioneering demonstration zone for the application of AI in China.

The industrial scale of AI in Guangzhou will exceed over 120 billion yuan ($17.25 billion). Eight industrial clusters and 10 AI industrial parks will be built in the city. More than 10 industrial leading companies will be cultivated, while 50 application scenerios for smart economy and smart society will be formed. Guangzhou will push forward the operation of 100 demonstrative application projects related to AI.

Guangzhou will launch major scientific projects themed around AI, as well as promote the landing of national or provincial AI scientific projects, and the transformation of outcomes.

The city will offer more support for key processes of the AI industry spanning circuit design, special equipment manufacturing, as well as inspection and testing.

It will introduce and cultivate a batch of circuit design companies with independent intellectual property rights and industry influence facing areas, such as 5G, the Internet of Things, automotive electronics, and smart terminals.

Six areas have been listed in the document as the main areas for the new generation of AI industry, namely transportation, business, finance, education, healthcare, and digital government.
