Guangzhou airport looks to streamline expat clearance services

eguangzhou.gov.cn | Updated:2019-03-08

The Baiyun exit and entry checkpoint has been working to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for inbound expats as the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport enters a period of high foreigner traffic, with 51,000 foreign travelers arriving at the airport daily.

After the Spring Festival holiday, many foreigners working, doing business, or studying abroad in China fly back to Guangzhou. This year, the airport has had more international flights and inbound passengers than usual.

In order to process passengers more efficiently, the Baiyun checkpoint has taken a number of measures such as dividing the passenger flow into Chinese nationals and foreigners and encouraging passengers to use self-service channels.

At the checkpoint, there is a special "Kapok Red" group consisting of police officers who have volunteered to provide assistance to passengers who are not familiar with the immigration process, as well as to the elderly and disabled.

The "Kapok Red" group was established in July 2017 and consists of 22 young policemen. During the holidays, important meetings, major events, and periods of peak passenger traffic, members use their spare time to guide the flow of passengers and help people claim lost luggage or complete clearance procedures.

Apart from Mandarin and Cantonese, the group can also provide high-quality services in nine different languages including English, French, Russian, Italian, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

To process travelers more efficiently, a police force consisting of speakers of English, Thai, Spanish, Japanese, and more, was also deployed to provide assistance to passengers, according to a manager at the Baiyun border checkpoint.
