E-commerce imports surge in Guangzhou

eguangzhou.gov.cn | Updated:2018-06-22

Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, saw a sharp growth in cross-border e-commerce importation over the past half year.

Each day, 50,000 to 60,000 items are imported through the bonded area of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, China's largest port in terms of cross-border e-commerce importation.

Compared with half a year ago, the number of daily e-commerce packages there has doubled. To date, the trade goods supervised by the customs office of the airport this year have approached 1.2 million tons, up 2.4 percent year-on-year. Among them are a total of 6.2 million e-commerce importation shipments, almost doubling that of the corresponding period in 2017.

To cope with the situation, airport customs has been enhancing goods clearance efficiency through consolidating inspection & quarantine and shortening supervision procedures for international express mails.

Similar situations also occurred in the Nansha area of the Guangdong Free Trade Zone, where numerous e-commerce giants such as Tmall.com and JD.com have settled and 20 percent of China's e-commerce importation transactions are made .

Accordingly, Nansha Customs, affiliated with Guangzhou Customs, has adopted a commodity quality tracing system to implement accurate supervision and fast clearance. E-commerce consumers can make inquiries and complaints about the service via cellphones.

Between January and May in 2018, the rate of unqualified e-commerce imports in Nansha Customs declined by 46.9 percent year-on-year. In the same period, the total value of imports reached 2.8 billion yuan ($444 million), up 60 percent from the previous year.
