The Guangdong Art Centennial Exhibition, an exhibition showcasing art works from the past 100 years, is being held in Guangdong Museum of Art and a painting depicting Xi Zhongxun, former chairman of the Soviet Government in Shaanxi-Gansu has gained much public attention.

Xi Zhongxun in Nanliang shows the historic scenario of Xi Zhongxun launching new policies at the Shaanxi-Gansu Border Revolutionary Base Area when Xi was chairman of the Soviet Government in Shaanxi-Gansu in 1930s.  

Shen Haixiong, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Guangdong Provincial Publicity Chief, paid a visit to the exhibition on Aug 9 and listened to the experience and feeling of Chen Yan, the painter of the artwork.

Chen Yan was born to a poor family in northern Shaanxi and settled in Shantou, Guangdong in late 1980. Chen's experiences in Yan'an and Shantou had a profound impact on the painting. Chen also applied a new way on the work: combining western painting techniques with Chinese ink wash painting to reflect the historic scene of Xi Zhongxun leading Guangdong in its implementation of reform and opening-up policies and in the construction of special economic zones.  

Shen said that the success of the painting shows that great works themed on revolutionary history can only be created by exploring new methods and going deep among the masses and into the thick of life. 

Shen said that current government departments are encouraging artists to pay attention to the present moment and create more similar works in the future to pay tribute to our era and promote Lingnan culture.
