Guangzhou, Macao seek co-development

Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou and Macao Special Administrative Region seek co-development at a special meeting held in Macao on June 5.

The meeting was co-chaired by Chen Zhiying, executive vice-mayor of Guangzhou, and Macao's Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lionel Leong Vai-tac, highlighting participation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and bilateral cooperation.

Macao values the construction of the Greater Bay Area, and expects to join hands with the Guangzhou government contributing its part in the national development strategy, according to Leong.

Both sides agree to focus on cooperation in the fields of education, environmental protection, finance, culture, convention and exhibition, and vocational training.

In addition, Macao and Guangzhou will boost exchanges among the youth and support them to set up business in either city, with further moves facilitating trade liberalization and cross-border e-commerce.

Leong noted at the meeting that Macao will cement its role of being the world's leisure and tourism hub and focus on developing into an education and training base for the tourism industry in the Greater Bay Area.

Guangzhou and Macao will join hands to build the Nansha free trade zone and with that more Macao enterprises are expected to invest in Guangzhou, reported in the meeting.

Representatives from Guangzhou municipal commission of commerce and Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute also signed a memorandum of understanding promoting the development of conference and exhibition industry in both cities.
