The film, adapted from the stage play of the same name, is based on the real story of archaeologist Fan Jinshi, who cherishes a dream to protect national cultural heritage and has remained in Dunhuang for more than 50 years.

It was filmed on location at Dunhuang Academy, Sanwei Mountain, the Nine-Story Building, and the grottoes. Mao Shanyu, a famous Shanghai opera performing artist and winner of the 17th Wenhua Performance Award, contributed to the stage play and the film. She led the creative team, who are also the old cast of the play, to sojourn in Dunhuang nine times over 10 years.

The film premiered in Shanghai in early October.

The star-studded event was held in the port city of Xiamen in Southeast China's Fujian province, from Nov 10 to Nov 12.
