In 2023, Wuyuan Bay saw a 50 percent increase in visitors compared to 2019, with over 500,000 people visiting specifically for sailing.

In the past, Wuyuan Bay was not a popular spot for Xiamen visitors and was mainly characterized by neglected tidal flats. Due to seawall construction and regional development, poor water exchange and pollution from agriculture and salt production led to a local per capita GDP in 2003 that was only 39.4 percent of the citywide average.

In 2005, Xiamen launched a comprehensive renovation project for Wuyuan Bay, opting to preserve 89 hectares of wetlands instead of pursuing real estate development.

The results demonstrated the importance of high-level protection for quality development. By the end of 2022, the land value in Wuyuan Bay had increased over eightfold compared to 2005, surpassing potential income from real estate development.

Today, Wuyuan Bay has evolved into Xiamen's bustling urban social center, attracting over 300 renowned enterprises. The establishment of the Amoy International Yacht Banquet and Wuyuan Bay Sailing Harbor has attracted a growing number of young people interested in sailing, yachting, and surfing. The city's culture is further enriched by weekend events like music festivals and art exhibitions.
