As 2024 draws to a close, the historic charms of Wenzhou – the port and industrial city in East China's Zhejiang province – is making waves, local media outlets have reported.
On Dec 30, the Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau submitted Wenzhou's proposal for the establishment of a national archaeological site park at Shuomen Ancient Port to the National Cultural Heritage Administration – a milestone in this much-anticipated project.
A month earlier, during the Mayors Exchange Conference on Maritime Silk Road City Influence, new archaeological discoveries were unveiled – including the excavation of Feng'en Gate from the time of the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
This discovery is said to complete the historical puzzle of Wenzhou's 10 ancient city gates, bringing to life its bustling past as a vibrant port of trade and commerce.
