China is one of the most critical markets for MSD’s growth strategy. MSD China, founded in 1992, is powered by three engines: commercial operations headquartered in Shanghai, research and development centered in Beijing, and manufacturing carried out in Hangzhou. 

MSD’s Plant in Hangzhou, a joint venture between MSD China and Huadong Medicine, was established in 1994 and has been operating for nearly 20 years, during which time it has developed and extended its range of products. 

The new Hangzhou plant, HEDA Plant, came into service in April 2013. This facility is one of the largest multinational pharmaceutical company packaging facilities in the Asian-Pacific region. It has nine high speed packaging lines, and supplies China and Asian-Pacific countries with a wide range of medicines. 

HEDA Plant was designed and constructed in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. It boasts modern air, waste, and water management procedures, and is equipped with water-free urinals, light energy sensors, and other energy-saving devices. Each year HEDA Plant sets challenging goals to reduce environmental pollution emissions. The team keeps tracking equipment and implementing effective approaches to enhance the stability of energy consumption, optimize operational efficiency, constantly adjust key parameters, and introduce energy-saving devices. With continuous efforts, HEDA Plant tripled production from 2013 to 2015 while managed to reduce air pollutant emissions and water usage. Meanwhile it continues to improve packaging technologies, decreasing the use of chlorinated plastics.

Over decades, MSD in China has grown fast in a dynamic health care industry, and is now a driving force in improving health care in the most populous country in the world. Today, MSD China brings over 40 innovative medicines and vaccines to the Chinese people, and believes that it can better protect human health through improving animal health. MSD has approximately 50 animal care products in China that are used for disease prevention, treatment, and health management of livestock, poultry, and companion animals.
