Oil-paper umbrellas are a traditional Han Chinese handicraft. Due to Hangzhou’s plentiful rainfall and abundant bamboo forests, such umbrellas were necessary rain gear in ancient times. The first oil-paper umbrella shop was established in the city in 1769 during the Qing Dynasty. Hangzhou is now home to the largest modern umbrella manufacturers in China, following a successful transition from traditional to modern umbrella manufacturing processes.
