Abstract: China’s nationwide reading has experienced three stages from enabling people to have easy access to books reading, to encouraging people to foster a love of reading and to ensuring that they could have more books for reading to enrich their knowledge. With the rapid application of digital technologies and the advent of digital era, digital reading has become a mainstream means of reading. Nationwide reading has propelled the boom of the digital reading industry, and the supply and demand growth of the digital reading industry has in turn boosted innovative development of reading fashion. But in the backdrop of digitalization drive, nationwide reading is still plagued by an inadequate reading content mix that remains to be improved, reading service efficacy to be enhanced, intellectual property rights protection to be strengthened, and the progress of nurturing the micro, small and medium-sized market entities for digital reading to be accelerated. Therefore, it is necessary to intensify support to people’s reading activities, step up the development of micro, small and medium-sized market entities in the reading industry, strengthen intellectual property rights protection, and reinforce legal regulation of unfair competition in the digital reading market.
