Updated: 2016-02-02 (cnnc.com.cn)

Controlled nuclear fusion is the ultimate solution to human energy. The Southwestern Institute of Physics is a large integrated institute with scientific research, technical development, talent training and productive operation. It is also the oldest and largest research and development base for controlled nuclear fusion energy in China.

The most advanced research and experiment base for controlled nuclear fusion in China was built. The advanced plasma research and development center and application industry park were established. The Engineering & Technical College of Chengdu University of Technology was founded. A good pattern has been formed with focus on development of nuclear fusion energy and coordination with development of the nuclear application technology industry and non-nuclear industries.

Controlled nuclear fusion

The Chinese nuclear fusion research devices such as HL 1, HL 1-1M and HL-2A have been built and operated. A number of internationally innovative outcomes have been obtained to make a technical foundation for further research and development of nuclear fusion reactors in China.

Plasma technology

It is dedicated to transfer of plasma technology application outcomes. Products such as a multifunction ion injector for material modification and a plasma filming machine have been successfully developed and applied in national defense, industry, scientific research and daily life.

Research and development of nuclear fusion experimental devices is fruitful.

The operation in divert or configuration under high confinement mode was achieved at the Chinese HL-2A. This indicates that the Chinese strength and level of research and development in magnetic confinement nuclear fusion energy have been greatly improved. The H mode was realized under high parameter conditions. A number of internationally innovative outcomes have been obtained.

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) is a member of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactors (ITER) organization. It has participated in various activities held by the ITER. Currently the CNNC is preparing to establish a nuclear fusion coordination laboratory in conjunction with France.
