Fan Chunhai, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), received his PhD from Nanjing University in 2000 and conducted his postdoctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2001 to 2003.

From 2004 to 2018, he served as a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CAS, and has been a professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) since 2018.

Currently, Fan works as dean of SJTU’s School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and executive director of the Institute of Translational Medicine. He is also a Tang Zhongying chief scientist at the National Center for Translational Medicine.

He is the deputy editor of JACS-Au, a journal of the American Chemical Society and serves on the editorial boards of more than 10 internationally renowned journals including Angewandte Chemie, Accounts of Chemical Research and ACS Nano. He is also co-chair of the editorial board of ChemPlusChem.

Fan is a member of the academic committee of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society of Electrochemistry, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He has published over 700 papers with approximately 80,000 citations and an H-index of 138. Meanwhile, since 2014, he has been consecutively named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate.

Fan's research team focuses on nucleic acid chemical biology studies. They have conducted long-term and systematic research in areas such as biosensing and imaging and DNA molecular self-assembly, and explored forefront applications including framework nucleic acid-based diagnostics and therapeutics for major diseases, DNA storage and computing, and molecular machines.
