Protein & Cell holds training program on illustration making

Protein & Cell hosted a training program on academic paper writing at the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on April 12.

The training session, named "Making Illustrations for High-Impact SCI Journal Papers", attracted about 100 participants from the institute.

The keynote speaker of the training was Bei Yuanyuan, founder of PaperArtist. Bei graduated in 2016 from the CAS Institute of Microbiology, and has since become a seasoned academic paper illustration designer with nearly 10 years of experience. He is proficient in various software programs such as Photoshop, Cinema 4D, Adobe Illustrator, SPSS, Origin, Prism and SigmaPlot.

During the lecture, Bei provided theoretical insight into and hands-on demonstrations on academic paper illustration production. Topics covered basics of image processing, cropping, resolution adjustment, data graph processing, flowchart processing, color matching, pattern graph creation, combined use of Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator and typesetting in Adobe Illustrator. 

He also emphasized the importance of avoiding academic misconduct during image processing. 

Following the lecture, participants engaged in discussions and posed questions. Many expressed their appreciation for the professional standards, fundamental knowledge, practical methods and techniques learned during the training.

The aim of this training was to better serve the faculty and students of the Institute of Biophysics and to express gratitude for the support the institute has provided to Protein & Cell over the years.

The journal also announced plans to hold another session of the series at the Chinese Biophysics Congress on July 25.
