The Lin Sheng Erhu Workshop was built by Lu Linsheng, a reputed erhu maker who is equal in popularity to Wan Qixing.
The workshop was one of the first erhu factories in Meicun. Today, it is owned by Lu's son-in-law, Bi Chunhong, who continues to preserve and pass on Lu's skills. Over 20 workers at the shop produce around 300 high-quality erhus every month.
Lu was born in Suzhou in the 1930s and started studying how to make erhus and other stringed instruments at the age of 14.
Over the past 60 years, Lu has devoted himself to studying erhu skinning techniques, exploring the acoustic vibrations of various woods, and producing various types of professional erhus with different wood types and python skin fibers. Lu was named "the master of international erhu making” in 2010.
