Clusters of pink and white flowers pop their heads out of trees on the Kechuang 11 and 14 Street of the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area (BDA) in April.

The apple and cherry blossom trees planted by the BDA Urban Operation Bureau last year are now bringing springtime color and vigor.

In addition to planting more trees, the bureau has also upgraded the slow-traffic system, multi-functional facilities, separation facilities, and crossroads to build the two roads into model "garden landscape" roads.

The upgrading will help residents in walking and riding, and will establish a network of bicycle lanes, pruned sidewalk trees, and trimmed grass belts.

It incorporates many human-centered designs, such as widening the sidewalk space, extending the sidewalk to both sides of the green belt, paving with colorful high-strength sand-blasted permeable bricks, increasing the sidewalk area, and adding flower beds and urban furniture.

The sides of the green belt edge are set up with open-hole high side stones, forming a green pool, which improves the environment and meets the needs of people for rest and walking.

Other methods include installing motor vehicle lane guardrails, bicycle lanes and separation belts, adding flower stands, billboards and garden lights to prevent illegal parking of vehicles and mixing of powered and non-mechanical traffic.

Furthermore, the bureau will improve urban functional facilities, add bicycle sheds, seats, lighting and sanitation facilities in line with actual needs, strengthen the crossroads landscape, and increase pedestrians rest facilities.

The Urban Operation Bureau will continue to upgrade roads in BDA this year to provide residents with a comfortable travel environment.
