Located at the southern foot of the Huangshan Scenic Area, Chengkan village boasts a rich history spanning over 1,800 years. Known as the "first village of Jiangnan," Chengkan is a masterpiece of Chinese aesthetics, offering visitors a journey through time and a glimpse into a living ink painting.
Originally named Longxi, Chengkan was established during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), and has preserved its unique cultural charm and architectural style. The village's layout is a marvel, strictly adhering to the Eight Trigrams from the "I Ching" (the Book of Changes). Its unique design resembles a labyrinth, embodying the philosophy of harmony between humans and nature. The Longxi River, resembling a jade belt, meanders through the village in an "S" shape, naturally forming the yin-yang symbol of the Eight Trigrams and harmonizing with the surrounding eight mountains.
Chengkan is a timeless village that invites everyone to appreciate its millennia-old beauty. Walking through the village feels like stepping into an ancient architectural museum. The village's buildings, with their white walls, black tiles, horse-head walls, and intricate stone, brick, and wood carvings, showcase the artisans' exquisite craftsmanship and pursuit of beauty. The Luodongshu Ancestral Hall stands out as the "First Ancestral Hall of Jiangnan," impressing visitors with its grand scale and intricate carvings.
