A large-scale folk orchestra concert was staged by Suzhou Chinese Orchestra at the National Center for the Performing Arts of China in Beijing on June 13.
Under the guidance of Chinese conductor Pang Kapang, the concert began with the symphonic poem Gardens in Four Seasons, which describes the changes experienced by renowned Suzhou gardens over the course of the four seasons.
Marching on the Bright Road and the First Dulcimer Concerto changed people's preconceived notions of what folk music should be.
The concert was ended with Ganjiang Moye Fantasia, based on Suzhou folklore – swordsmith Ganjiang and his wife Moye, expressing the spirit of upholding justice and bravery.
Co-founded by the Suzhou municipal government and Suzhou New District in December 2017, the Suzhou Chinese Orchestra aims to promote traditional Chinese culture by integrating Chinese folk music into orchestral performances, and reinterpreting and expressing traditional Chinese music through symphony.
A spokesman said that in the second half of the year, the orchestra will embark on an international tour, starting with Japan and South Korea, to promote traditional Chinese music around the world.
