Suzhou Chinese Orchestra made its debut at the annual Beijing Modern Music Festival on May 21.
The orchestra performed at the Chang Ge Xing traditional orchestral works concert in Beijing Concert Hall and attracted more than 1,000 concertgoers.
Conducted by the national-level master Pang Kapang, the orchestra performed three self-composed symphonies: Zhuang Zhou Meng for cello and traditional Chinese orchestras, pipa concerto Chang Ge Xing, and Macao Capriccio for traditional Chinese orchestras.
Two other pieces by foreign composers were also conducted during the concert: Remote Heart II by Jiri Kaderabek and Ihmix by Jukka Tiensuu.
After its performance in Beijing, the Suzhou-based orchestra will in July leave for Portland State University in Oregon to embark on a concert tour of the United States which will later hit Europe .
The Suzhou Chinese Orchestra was founded on Dec 24, 2017. Its inaugural concert was held on Dec 25, 2017 at the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre Grand under the baton of Pang Kapang, who is also the orchestra's artistic director.
The young Suzhou Chinese Orchestra has over 90 musicians from more than five countries and regions, including Chinese mainland, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Capitalizing on the success they have enjoyed to date, the orchestra has plans to organize festivals and forums on traditional Chinese music in Suzhou in an attempt to make the city a hotbed for composing, performing and exploring traditional music.
