In 1987, the Great Wall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2006, the Regulations on the Protection of the Great Wall went into effect. In the same year, Beijing established its first farmers’ organization for Great Wall protection—the Great Wall Protection Association in Shixia Village. Over the past two decades, despite changes in the personnel, the initial commitment of the Association to safeguarding the Great Wall has remained unchanged. Taking turns to be Great Wall guardians, everyone in the Association is passionately driven by the shared goal. For them, guarding the Great Wall is actually guarding their own homeland.
