Han started strongly in the opening set to build a 6-2 edge. Although Shimizu broke early in the second set to lead 2-0, the top seed left no room for her opponent and pulled victory back at 6-2 with a quick response.

In her first Australian Open action, Han is looking forward to meet Serena Williams, now the strongest power in women's tennis, at Rod Laver Arena.

On the men's side, 2nd-seed Ito faced pressure from top-seed Jason Jung of Chinese Taipei. Despite Jung's holding a 4-1 lead, Ito seized six of the next seven games to take the opening set. The Japanese broke Jung to open the second set and held on for a 7-5, 6-4 win.

Chinese players Wang Xiaofei and Tian Fangran won the Junior Championships boy's and girl's single wildcard respectively.

The 2020 Australian Open will be held at Melbourne Park from Jan 20 to Feb 2. It promises to kick off the Grand Slam season with stellar tennis and a laid-back atmosphere.
