The Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone (Wanshan Zone) located in the east of Zhuhai is one of the first such comprehensive marine sites in China. The zone plays an important role in both the economic and social development framework of city, particularly affecting its “Blue Marine” economic development strategy.
Wanshan Zone is located in the Pearl River Estuary, covering 3,200 sq km of sea area with 106 islands of various sizes. The main islands are Guishan, Dong’ao, Large Wanshan, Small Wanshan, Baili, Huangmao, Wailingding, Dan’gan, and Miaowan.
This zone is habitat to over 200 varieties of fish. Moreover, Chinese white dolphins are protected at the state-level, macaque monkeys by the province, and coral by the city.
There is an international yacht and fishing area as well. It also has many harbors suitable for deep-water port construction. The zone also has two significant 5-star hotels: Club Med and The Dreamland Resort.
Most of the islands have preserved the original natural ecological environment, abundant with soft sand beaches and rare vivid life-like stones.
Infrastructure, including water and electricity, is more than adequate to meet all civilian and production needs. Moreover, high-speed-liner routes cover major islands, including Dan’gan Island as its farthest destination.
In accordance with requirements to “start steadily in one year, achieve initial success in three years and form characteristics in five years,” Wanshan Zone manifests a broad vision, insisting upon high-end planning, preserved ecology and unique development, and morphing into a world-leading oceanic development.
