XJTU delegation visits Thailand

Zhang Liqun, president of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), led a delegation on a visit to Thailand from May 6-9. The is part of efforts to solidify the relationship between China and Thailand, as next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The delegation visited Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, and the Office of the Basic Education Commission of Thailand, focusing on deepening exchanges and cooperation in talent cultivation, scientific research, and industry-university-research collaboration.

The delegations visit to Chulalongkorn University took place on May 7. President Bundhit Eua-arporn offered them a warm welcome and introduced the university's history and development. He expressed a sincere desire to engage in deep exchanges and academic cooperation with XJTU in a range of disciplines.

Zhang provided an overview of XJTU's operations, noting that the university initiated the establishment of the "University Alliance of the Silk Road" and built the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour. The two sides also discussed ways to expand international student exchanges and faculty research collaborations.

Zhang also investigated the development of the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University, and expressed his hope that the institute can lead to deeper cooperation and exchanges between the universities and help more outstanding Thai students study at XJTU.

On the morning of May 8, the delegation paid a follow-up visit to Thammasat University. This visit coincided with the university's 90th anniversary. Zhang extended his sincere congratulations and best wishes for the university's future development.

Afterwards, during the discussions with the Office of the Basic Education Commission of Thailand, both parties reached a preliminary agreement to jointly establish an overseas education base for XJTU.

On the afternoon of May 8, Zhang, on behalf of XJTU, signed the "XJTU Joint Establishment of International Student Recruitment Base Agreement" with two Thai high schools, and awarded plaques designating them as "Parent School for Undergraduate Program of XJTU."

During the visit on May 9, Zhang called on Han Zhiqiang, the Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, visited Thai XJTU alumni and conveyed the university's ongoing support of them. He was also invited to participate in the 64th Annual General Meeting of the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers, where he delivered a report.

Chulalongkorn University is Thailand's oldest and most prestigious comprehensive university, founded by the Thai royal family in 1917. It is named after King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Thammasat University, Thailand's second oldest university, is hailed as the "cradle of Thai Prime Ministers."
