Tan Tieniu, an alumnus of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), was granted the King-Sun Fu Prize, the highest honor in pattern recognition, by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).

Tan is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and researcher of the CAS' Institute of Automation. He was commended for his pioneering and landmark contributions to biometrics with practical applications.

Tan has long been engaged in research on pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. He is a pioneer in iris recognition and gait recognition. His research results have been widely used in the national economy and people's livelihoods.

In honor of Professor King-Sun Fu, who was instrumental in the founding of IAPR, the prize is given to scientists in recognition of their outstanding technical contribution to the field of pattern recognition.
