A media briefing for the surgery equipment's launch is held on Nov 25.

The world's first 30W blue laser surgery equipment, developed by the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) developed, has been put into clinical use.

The hospital has successfully performed two operations using it, achieving a major breakthrough in research and manufacturing of major domestic laser-based medical equipment and marking a major innovation in the integration of medicine and industry.

Lyu Yi, president of the hospital, said medical-industrial collaborative innovation is a development strategy that is part of the university's "Double First Class" construction, which refers to a plan to construct world-class universities and first-class disciplines.

"The world's first 30W blue laser surgical equipment was successfully developed and put into clinical use, which is a major innovation in the integration of medicine and industry. I hope that the hospital will continue to work hard, develop higher-end medical devices, and strive to build a national and regional medical center," Lyu said.

The equipment was developed by a research team under Professor He Dalin from the hospital's department of urology. The project also had the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The research team said it will strive to achieve three goals. One is to develop 200W blue laser equipment. The second is to gradually promote the application of blue laser equipment in the treatment of diseases in gastroenterology, gynecology, otolaryngology, respiratory and stomatology. The third is to give full play to the role of the hospital as an affiliated unit of the university to improve both research and talent training in related fields, and promote the application of equipment in primary medical institutions to benefit more patients.

The blue semiconductor laser was discovered in the early 1990s. In clinical applications, compared with other lasers, blue lasers have the advantages of a faster vaporization effect, better hemostasis effect, less thermal damage to tissue, smaller size and less noise.
