Five XJTU alumni elected as CAS, CAE academicians

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) alumni Qian Depei and Qiao Hong have been elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the CAS on Nov 18. 

On the same day, the Chinese Academy of Engineering said that Hu Xiaomian and Jia Pingwei have been elected as its academicians, and Zhangxing John Chen is now its  foreign academician.

Qian Depei, who graduates from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in 1977 with a major in computer science, is a professor at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Qian has long been engaged in computer architecture and high-performance computing system research. He solved the key technical problems of building a network computing environment based on decentralized, heterogeneous, and dynamic resources, researched the development of China's high-performance computing environment, and proposed a systematic method to improve many-core parallel programming, which promoted the popularization and application of high-performance computing.

Qiao Hong graduates from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in 1989 with a master's degree. She is also a researcher at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Qiao has been engaged in robot theory and application research and has made important systematic and creative contributions to robot decision-making, perception, control and structural design inspired by humans. She is also an IEEE Fellow.

Hu Xiaomian graduates from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1983. She is a researcher at the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics.

Hu has been engaged in the research of nuclear physics engineering technology and is one of the leading experts in the field of comprehensive scientific experimentation in engineering physics and precision experimental physics design in China.

Jia Weiping graduates from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) Health Science Center with a doctoral degree in 2003. She is currently the director of the Shanghai Diabetes Research Institute, director of the National Basic-level Diabetes Management Office, and a counselor of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

Jia has long been committed to precise diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, early warning screening, research on pathogenesis and management of prevention and treatment projects.

Zhangxing John Chen graduates from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) with a master's degree in computational mathematics in 1985. He is now an academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, an academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a national chair professor at the University of Calgary.

Chen is an internationally renowned expert in reservoir engineering. He has made outstanding achievements in the study of seepage mechanics, new technologies for enhanced oil and gas recovery technology, theories and methods of reservoir numerical simulation, artificial intelligence, visualization technology, technology transfer and application.
