Leaders of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) attend the Virtual Annual Presidents' Meeting 2021 of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) from August 25 to 26.

As a representative of universities in Asia, Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) was invited to attend the Virtual Annual Presidents' Meeting 2021 of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) from Aug 25 to 26. 

XJTU President Wang Shuguo delivered a speech at the presidents' panel with the theme "The Role of Advancement at Research Universities". 

In his speech, Wang pointed out that the comprehensive development of research universities is a strategic and comprehensive relationship management method that is highly integrated with the rapid development of globalization and digitalization.

"The era of the fourth industrial revolution is surging. Research universities must strengthen innovation-driven awareness and become the forerunners of high-quality development. In this process, it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation with units in the industry and research fields, and explore new paths for integrated development," Wang said.

He introduced XJTU's practices in the construction of iHarbour, as well as discussed the recent construction of several schools.

He called on APRU members to work together to explore new development paths for higher education in the post-epidemic era, promote global sustainable development, and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind.

XJTU Vice-President Xi Guang made gave speeches at the "Senior International Leaders' Meeting".

APRU Secretary General Christopher Tremewan gave a speech on behalf of the Association at the presidents' panel. Wang, President Peter Høj of the University of Adelaide, and President Santa Ono of the University of British Columbia shared concepts and practices regarding the comprehensive development of research universities.

Sue Cunningham, president and CEO of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, a global non-profit association dedicated to educational advancement, chaired the forum.

APRU was established in Los Angeles in 1997. Its members include the presidents of 60 leading research universities from around the Pacific Rim. These universities include 200,000 academic staff and 2 million students.

The Annual Presidents' Meeting aims to boost mutual friendship and trust by inviting well-known universities and newly-joined schools, promote opportunities for project cooperation and development, and jointly shape a "new normal" for university development.
