Cheng Li, XJTU alumnus, is elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) this year.

It was announced on June 14 that Professor Cheng Li, an alumnus who enrolled in Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in 1980 majoring in Applied Mechanics, has been elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE).

This is one of the highest honors awarded by the Canadian Federal Government in the field of engineering to represent Canada’s national level experts.

Cheng graduated from XJTU with a bachelor's degree in Applied Mechanics in 1984. In the same year, he was admitted as a state-sponsored international student. In 1985, he went to the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées in Lyon, France for further study. He was engaged in study and research in the field of vibration and acoustics and received a doctorate in 1989.

Since 1992, he has taught at Laval University in Canada and has served as assistant professor, associate professor and professor and obtained tenure. Since 2000, he has been employed as a professor of vibration and acoustics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and has served as chair professor and department head of mechanical engineering.

Currently, he is a member of six societies including the Acoustical Society of America, the Acoustical Society of China, and the International Society of Acoustics and Vibration. 

He also serves as the vice chairman of Asia-Pacific affairs of the International Institutes of Acoustics and Vibration and as a member of the board of directors of the International Institutes of Noise Control Engineering. He is also a former president of the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
